At BSC Flooring, we know that a beautiful new floor is only as good as the installation beneath it. Whether it's hardwood, vinyl, or laminate, small mistakes during fitting can lead to big issues down the line: lifting edges, gaps, noise, or worse.
As trusted floor fitters serving Essex and Greater London, we've seen it all, and we make sure our clients never have to deal with the hidden problems caused by rushed or unprofessional work.
Here are five of the most common flooring installation mistakes, and how we avoid every single one.
The mistake:
Laying flooring directly onto an uneven or damp subfloor is a recipe for problems. Over time, boards can shift, buckle, or warp, especially in areas prone to moisture.
How we avoid it:
Before we fit a single plank, we carry out a full subfloor inspection. We check for damp, uneven spots, cracks, or unstable screed. If smoothing or damp-proofing is needed, we include it in our quote up front, so there are no surprises later.
The mistake:
Underlay isn’t one-size-fits-all. Using the wrong type (or skipping it entirely) can reduce comfort, allow noise to travel, and even void warranties, especially with laminate or click vinyl systems.
How we avoid it:
We match underlay to the flooring type, the room’s purpose, and even the floor below. That means better insulation, a quieter finish, and a longer-lasting result.
The mistake:
Glue-down vinyl or LVT needs time and precision. Rushing through adhesive application or skipping setting time can cause planks to lift or shift later on.
How we avoid it:
We take the time to apply adhesive evenly, allow for open time where needed, and carefully roll the flooring to ensure full contact. We also brief clients on drying time before moving in furniture.
The mistake:
Inaccurate cutting around door frames, corners or edges can ruin the look of a new floor, especially with patterned vinyl, tiles, or herringbone layouts.
How we avoid it:
We measure twice (sometimes three times). Every cut is made with the right tools for the material, and we finish edges properly with trims, thresholds, or sealants as needed. Clean, precise cuts are what set a professional job apart.
The mistake:
Wood and laminate need room to expand. Skipping this can lead to buckling or lifting, especially in summer or near underfloor heating.
How we avoid it:
We always leave the correct expansion gap around the edges and use appropriate trims and beading to cover them. We also educate our clients on how to care for their floor to prevent temperature-related damage.
Flooring is an investment, and poor fitting can shorten its life by years. At BSC Flooring, we bring years of experience, precision tools, and a “no shortcuts” mindset to every job.
Whether it’s vinyl, laminate, hardwood or commercial safety flooring, we make sure the surface you walk on is secure, level, and made to last.
